Grand Central Station Fire Forces 500 to Flee
Associated Press
NEW YORK — A trash fire at Grand Central Terminal on Saturday sent smoke billowing into the main concourse and caused the evacuation of about 500 people, authorities said.
The blaze began shortly after 10 a.m. under the cement slab of a platform on the station’s upper level, a Fire Department spokesman said, adding that the fire was under control within an hour.
Homeless people were thought to be responsible for the fire, which police considered of suspicious origin because debris should not have been under the platform.
