Lithuania’s Struggle for Independence
The editorial “The Best of Both Worlds” (April 18) suggests that in the name of “long-term peace in Europe,” Western nations are justified in allowing Mikhail Gorbachev to maintain “a leash” on independence-minded Lithuania. The wisdom of such a position greatly disturbs me. I fail to see how “long-term peace” can ever be achieved in Europe while certain members of the European community, who have overwhelmingly expressed their desire for self-determination, are treated like some sort of an animal.
Western nations must realize that true peace will never be achieved in Europe as long as millions of people along the Baltic Sea remain bound in the chains of an oppressor. The time has come for peace seekers in the West to heed the wisdom of the ages and remember that there can be no peace without justice.
