RIBBON CUTTER: The long-awaited opening of Irvine’s first hospital, now scheduled for June 11, has set off a minor competition between doctors over who will admit the first patient. . . . “I’ve promised at least 55 physicians that they would have the first patient,” said John C. Gaffney, president of the Irvine Medical Center (D8), located between the 405 and 5 freeways. . . . While elective surgeries may be scheduled for the first day, Gaffney said that, with the emergency room open and the freeways nearby, “I wouldn’t be surprised to see some rescue squad business right away.”
