California in Brief : Modesto : Cruising Law Works Before Taking Effect

Ordinances limiting cruising in the town that inspired the film “American Graffiti” appear to have cleaned up the popular McHenry Avenue even before they take effect tonight, police said. Lt. Burl Condit said that in the six weeks since the ordinance was passed, cruising along McHenry Avenue has dwindled to about half the usual number of cars. Authorities may impose cruising limits only when traffic moves less than 5 m.p.h. or intersections are blocked.
