OXNARD : Phony Police Are Soliciting by Phone
The Oxnard Police Department on Saturday received several complaints from residents who said they had been called by people claiming to be from the Police Department and asking for money “to fight drugs,” Sgt. Chuck Hookstra said.
“The callers were insistent on getting at least a $20 contribution and made appointments to pick up the money later,” Hookstra said.
About four people called the police within one hour, and all lived in the Colonia area, Hookstra said.
The Police Department does not solicit, Hookstra said. “We’ve had people in the past soliciting and claiming to represent other organizations, but never the Police Department,” he said. “It takes a lot of guts to do that.”
People who may have received similar calls are encouraged to call the police, Hookstra said.
