MOVIE REVIEW : ‘Honeymoon’: Weak Humor in a Stale Plot
- Share via
Robert Hays, who first gained recognition in “Airplane!” is such an able farceur that it’s a shame he’s wasted in such a stale, repetitive comedy-adventure as “Honeymoon Academy” (citywide). He plays a bridegroom who’s on his honeymoon when his bride’s past catches up with her. Unknown to him, she’s been a government agent, and now she’s been maneuvered out of retirement and into tracking down some counterfeit plates.
Director Gene Quintano and his co-writer Jerry Lazarus whip up plenty of action but none of it is inspired or funny. As the bride, Kim Cattrall is stuck trying to make a Goldie Hawn-Gracie Allen ditzy stereotype amusing; why ever would the State Department have recruited such an airhead for dangerous and important courier missions? At least Hays doesn’t have to play so dumb.
“Honeymoon Academy” (rated PG-13 for language) has nothing to recommend it; even the splendid Spanish locales look glum.
