Roman Catholic Bishop Leo T. Maher has shown improvement in the neurological symptoms that had worsened before his second brain surgery last week, his Scripps Clinic doctor said Tuesday.

Dr. Thomas Waltz, chief of neurosurgery, said Maher has gradually regained better use of his left arm and leg over the past week. That neurological function is now about the same as it was when Maher was first diagnosed with a brain tumor, Waltz said.

Maher underwent his first surgery for a brain tumor April 25, and a second operation last Wednesday to remove a swollen tumor remnant. About 95% of the tumor has been removed, Waltz said.

Maher was in good condition, and radiation therapy may begin before he leaves the hospital, Scripps spokeswoman Sue Pondrom said.
