El Segundo Closes City Swimming Pool After Asbestos Is Found
- Share via
El Segundo officials have closed the city swimming pool indefinitely as a precaution after the discovery of asbestos in several areas of the facility.
City Manager Ron Cano said Friday that a preliminary report by a consultant concluded that part of the problem could be handled through minor patching and repair but that some of the asbestos must be removed. A final report by consultant Robert E. Gills is due in a week.
Cano decided on the closure because he feared that asbestos around pipes and in boiler rooms and restrooms could become airborne. Asbestos fibers can be carcinogenic if inhaled, but Cano said no one has been endangered so far.
The patching and basic repairs can be done in six to eight weeks, Cano said, and a final report will determine to how much asbestos must be removed.
Called the Urho Saari Swim Stadium, the pool on Mariposa Avenue is named in honor of a renowned El Segundo High School swimming coach.
