Nine to Be Inducted Into Jewish Hall of Fame

Nine athletes will be inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and Orange County high school scholar/athletes will be presented with “Jewish Young Leaders in Sports” awards in ceremonies on June 10 at the Irvine Hilton.

The Hall of Fame inductees are:

--Barry Asher, a member of the pro bowlers Hall of Fame;

--Harris Barton, offensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers;

--Mike Epstein, former member of the Angels, Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics;

--Noah Klieger, a boxer on whose story the new movie “Triumph of the Spirit” is based;

--Shep Messing, goalie for the New York Cosmos during the Pele era;

--Harold Solomon, winner of 24 Grand Prix tennis championships;

--Alex Schoenbaum, an All-American football player at Ohio State in the 1930s;

--Brian Teacher, winner of the 1980 Australian Open tennis championship;

--Neal Walk, former member of the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks.

High jumper Dwight Stones will present the “Jewish Young Leaders in Sports” awards. The 1990 finalists include Blake Alban (golf), Marina High School; Michael Churgel (diving), Fountain Valley; Julie Gilbert (cross-country and track) Esperanza; Brandi Krantz (swimming), Woodbridge; Shana Novegrod (soccer), University; Matthew Webber (wrestling), Canyon, and Amanda Wheeland (track), Dana Hills.

KNBC sportscaster Fred Roggin will be master of ceremonies. Special guests at the induction ceremonies include Mark Spitz, Jack Youngblood and Ken Norton.
