THE SIDELINES : Graf, Seles Top French Seeding
PARIS — Two-time champion Steffi Graf and Monica Seles, who ended Graf’s 66-match winning streak last Sunday, will be the top two seeds at the French Open tennis tournament, according to the Women’s International Tennis Assn. rankings.
Although there may be late withdrawals until Friday, when the final seeding list becomes official, today’s seedings follow the WITA rankings among the players entered. The $5.35-million event, the second leg of the Grand Slam, is to begin Monday.
Graf, who won the French Open in 1987 and 1988, is the top seed according to her No. 1 world ranking. She also was victorious in the Australian Open in January, the first Grand Slam event of the year.
Martina Navratilova, ranked second in the world, is skipping the premier clay-court tournament. Instead, she is focusing on grass court play in preparation for Wimbledon, which begins next month.
