HUNTINGTON BEACH : $4,000 Voted for Grad Night Parties
The City Council has voted to give $1,000 to each of the city’s four public high schools for their annual “grad night” celebrations.
The parties are drug- and alcohol-free events held on the high school campuses the night of graduation. Parents supervise the all-night parties, which feature elaborate decorations, music, food, games and prizes.
Police Chief Ronald E. Lowenberg last week urged the City Council to approve the $4,000 total appropriation for all the high schools.
Councilman Jim Silva said he had reservations about voting for the funds. He said he had heard that one of the four schools, Marina High, “already has all the money it needs for this from bingo.”
But Silva said he would vote for the proposal because the police chief supported it.
The final vote was 6 to 0, with Councilman Wes Bannister absent.
The schools getting the money will be Marina, Edison High, Ocean View High and Huntington Beach High.
