COPENHAGEN — American tenor saxophonist David Murray will be awarded the second International Jazzpar Prize, the awarding committee said Monday.
“Murray will receive the prize which is given to an internationally known and fully active jazz artist who is specially deserving of further acclaim,” said Arnvid Meyer of the Danish Jazz Centre. He is chairman of the award committee, made up of leading jazz experts from Europe and the United States.
The prize, which carries a cash award of $30,000 and the Jazzpar bronze sculpture, will be given to Murray in a ceremony next March.
Muhal Richard Abrams, a pianist, clarinetist, arranger and composer from Chicago, was awarded the first Jazzpar Prize.
