Night for Kroc to Be July 27

Joan Kroc, until last week the owner of the Padres, will be honored July 27 before the Padres’ game against Houston at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, it was announced Wednesday.

The tribute to Kroc, who sold the club to a group headed by television producer Tom Werner, will include video highlights from over the years and appearances by celebrities and former Padre players.

Brad Gerlach of Leucadia and 16-year-old amateur Rob Machado of Cardiff were among those advancing to today’s second round in the $50,000 Killer Loop event on the south side of the Oceanside Pier. Gerlach, who is ranked 13th internationally, will face Mike Johnson-Collins of Coronado and Mat Archbold and Chris Billy of Dana Point in the first heat at 7:30 a.m.

The competition continues through Sunday.
