Woo Fined $2,000 for Ethics Violation

Los Angeles City Councilman Michael Woo, who has spearheaded efforts to get an ethics reform measure approved, has been fined $2,000 for illegally voting to give a contract to a political contributor, it was learned Thursday.

Woo, chairman of the city’s Ad Hoc Ethics Committee and a leading proponent of a sweeping ethics reform measure approved by city voters this month, said Thursday that he agreed to pay the fine to the state Fair Political Practices Commission. The settlement is expected to be approved by the commission next month.

Woo acknowledged violating the law, but insisted it was unintentional.

“Even an advocate for ethics can end up making inadvertent violations,” he said. “It’s all the more reason we need to decrease the need to raise campaign funds.”

Woo had voted to give business to consulting firms and other major contributors, in apparent violation of state regulations.
