Mission College Gets New Temporary Home
Mission College officially moved to a new site in San Fernando on Thursday to make way for construction of Tianguis, a supermarket specializing in Latino foods.
But the new location, at 1320 San Fernando Road, is only temporary. The Los Angeles Community College District is building a brand-new campus in the hills above Sylmar, expected to be opened in 1991.
Since it was established in 1975, the college has held its classes in storefronts, high school classrooms and hospital auditoriums throughout the San Fernando Valley.
Speakers at Thursday’s ceremony made light of the “Gypsy” campus, calling the most recent move a “dress rehearsal.”
“If patience is a virtue, this is one heck of a virtuous community,” said Richard Alarcon, recently appointed as Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley’s Valley representative.
