Interim School Superintendent Chosen
Retired school administrator and longtime El Segundo resident Walther Puffer has been named interim superintendent of the El Segundo Unified School District.
Puffer, 61, begins work Monday, replacing Supt. Richard Bertain, who will become associate director of ACTION, a federal agency that coordinates such national volunteer programs as VISTA and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Puffer retired a year ago after 35 years with the Beverly Hills Unified School District, where he was assistant superintendent. He has lived in El Segundo since 1941 and attended school there.
Puffer will serve El Segundo on a part-time basis until Bertain’s successor is chosen, probably in two to three months. He will receive between $4,000 and $6,000 a month, depending on the amount of time he works.
