WORLD IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Rebels Accused of Hacking 41 to Death

The military claimed that fleeing Tamil rebels hacked and shot to death 41 Sinhalese and Muslim villagers suspected of helping the army in Sri Lanka’s civil war. Military officials said the killings occurred in five northern and eastern villages. “The Tamil terrorists are on the run into the jungles, and in desperation they want to kill as many as possible before they get killed,” Deputy Defense Minister Ranjan Wijeratne said. In a separate development in the south, unidentified assailants shot to death 13 Sinhalese villagers.
