Woods Advances to Third Round at U.S. Junior Golf
Tiger Woods, 14, of Cypress won two matches Thursday and is one of 16 players who advanced to the third round of match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Lake Merced Golf and Country Club.
Play continues today with two more rounds of match play. The semifinals and final are scheduled Saturday.
Woods beat Travis Williams of Greenwood, Miss., 2-up, in the first match and Brian Johnson of Shreveport, La., on the 19th hole in the second round.
In a battle of county golfers, Scott Richardson of Laguna Niguel defeated Albert Oh of Orange, 6-and-5, then lost 1-up to Billy Faeth of Bakersfield.
Chris Riley of San Diego, who was a semifinalist last year, lost to Colby Lamberton, of Lake Forest, Ill., 2-and-1.
Medalist Dennis Hillman of Rye, N.Y., also advanced.
In today’s third-round match, Woods will meet Brian Waggoner of Old Hickory, Tenn.
