P.M. BRIEFING : U.S.-Japan Computer Chip Deal

KOBE, Japan —
Kobe Steel Ltd. and Texas Instruments Inc. said today they will start manufacturing computer chips in 1992 at a $367-million plant to be built in Japan.
The companies said the new firm, KTI Semiconductor Ltd., will build a factory in Nishiwaki in Hyogo Prefecture. Construction is slated to begin next spring with completion scheduled for 1992.
The facility will employ about 300 workers and produce 16,000 6-inch wafers a month, the companies said.
