On July 20, 1990, Gov. George Deukmejian signed a bill (SB 153, Craven) that officially recognizes certified interior designers in the State of California, incorporating them in the Business and Professions Code.

Additionally, the bill will once again allow interior designers to submit plans to building departments.

The legislation was introduced at the request of the California Legislative Conference on Interior Design (CLCID), whereby SB 153 would reverse a law enacted in 1986 (SB 790, Seymour, 1985-Section 5538.C Business and Professional Code) that through administrative interpretation prohibited interior designers from submitting their drawings and documents to building departments throughout California.

Greg Ziol, president of CLCID said: “Certification, with its education, experience and examination requirements, should help the general public determine who is qualified to practice interior design.”

CLCID, Ziol said, is made up of more than 6,300 interior designers affiliated with professional interior design groups.
