Nomads Fall Out of Playoff Contention

The San Diego Nomads were eliminated from playoff contention in the Western Soccer League after 4-1 loss Saturday night to Real Santa Barbara at Southwestern College.

Pat Henderson scored the Nomads’ only goal with 11:20 left in the game. The Nomads had 29 shots on goal and finished their season with an 8-12 record.

J.J. Kenzel’s goal broke a 1-1 tie as San Dieguito Surf defeated a West German team, 2-1, to reach today’s semifinals in the boys’ 16 division of the San Dieguito Surf International tournament. San Dieguito Surf will play the Bonita Rebels, and the Alta Loma Arsenal will face the Mission Viejo Pateadores in the other semifinal. North Huntington Beach plays the La Jolla Nomads in one boys’ 19 semifinals, Cisco (Phoenix, Ariz) facing San Pedro in the other.

In the girls’ 19 semifinals, San Dieguito Surf will play Pegasus Black of Rancho Bernardo, and Fountain Valley will play Pegasus White.

BASEBALL

The San Diego Stars, a county all-star team of Pony League players, defended their national championship late Friday by defeating Honolulu, 2-1.

The team played 12 games in six days.

In final game, Mario Sanchez of La Mesa scored the winning run on a hit by Jeff Dufek of Scripps Ranch. Mission Bay’s John Pellegrin was the winning pitcher.

David Myers of La Jolla was the team had an average near .500 for the tournament.

Many of the San Diego players will leave on Wednesday for the USSR to help train Soviet youths in the sport.
