HANDMADE : The Good Box

HIGH-QUALITY, flexible, environmentally aware--Wayne Stahnke has responded to all three concerns with his wooden jewelry boxes. Each of the Point Wood Designs pieces (which range in price from $75 to $660) is sanded and oiled by hand. Stahnke has designed a flexible box that expands to accommodate growing jewelry collections. Instead of gluing the boxes together, he uses removable pegs to make adding new drawers easier.

The boxes come in domestic and exotic woods, the selection of which changes with the condition of specific rain forests. Current representatives include Purpleheart from South America and Padauk and Zebrawood from Africa. “We try to get our woods from areas that are practicing managed-forest techniques,” he says.

The jewelry boxes are sold at Bedfellows, 12250 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, (818) 985-0500, and Contemporary Center, 2630 W. Sepulveda Blvd., Torrance, (213) 539-1933. Or telephone Point Wood Designs, (714) 778-8955.
