HUNTINGTON BEACH : 9 Challengers Vie for School Board Seats

Two Ocean View School District board members have decided not to seek reelection, opening the door for nine challengers vying for four seats.

Trustees Janet Garrick and Elizabeth A. Spurlock opted not to run when their terms expire Nov. 6. Candidates have until 5 p.m. today to file at the Orange County registrar’s office to join the contest. Last Friday’s filing deadline was extended because the two incumbents are not running.

At stake are three four-year terms and Spurlock’s seat, a two-year term. Because Spurlock was appointed to the board, not elected, her successor’s term will expire in November, 1992.

In addition to eight of the challengers competing for four-year terms, board President Charles Osterlund is running for reelection.

Trustee Carolyn Hunt, whose term also expires in November, is running for Spurlock’s two-year seat rather than seeking another full term. By 5 p.m. Tuesday, one challenger had filed to run against Hunt for the short-term seat.

Candidates must be registered voters and live within the district boundaries, which comprises most of northwest Huntington Beach and parts of Fountain Valley, Westminster and unincorporated Midway City.
