TV REVIEW : A Captivating ‘Mother Goose’
The Muppet master’s legacy lives on in “Jim Henson’s Mother Goose Stories,” a captivating new half-hour series for young children premiering Saturday at 8:30 a.m. on the Disney Channel.
Adapted from L. Frank Baum’s “Mother Goose in Prose” and directed by Henson’s son Brian, the series tells whimsical stories based on familiar nursery rhymes, using real children, storybook settings and new visual delights from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
Each week, verses such as “Pat-a-Cake,” “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring” and “Little Bo-Peep” come to humorous life, as told by Mother Goose to her goslings. The stories are peopled with comic, mobile-faced Muppet eccentrics--unruly sheep, bellicose giants, kings and queens--and real girls and boys.
The format’s simplicity and gentle humor will appeal to preschoolers; adult Muppet fans can appreciate the survival of creative genius.
The series, which is premiering during one of the Disney Channel’s “free” viewing periods (which makes it available this weekend to all cable TV subscribers), also airs Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
