Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Players Honored
The Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Babe Ruth team, which was eliminated from the Babe Ruth World Series by eventual champion Youngstown, Ohio, , placed several players on tournament honor squads.
Named to the All-World Series team were second baseman/pitcher Julio Marcial of Cleveland High, third baseman Justin Paperny of Montclair Prep, and center fielder Cesar Martinez of Notre Dame.
Martinez was the World Series’ leading hitter with a .667 batting average, and Paperny tied the series record with 13 runs batted in. He did so in three fewer games than a Youngstown player who also drove in 13 runs.
Two Van Nuys players--Marcial and infielder/pitcher Jimmy Lemos of Sylmar High--were named to the Gold Glove all-defensive team.
Youngstown knocked Van Nuys out of the tournament Thursday with a 14-12 win. Van Nuys finished 2-2 in the World Series and 16-4 for the season.
