In her Cal State Northridge debut last weekend, Welch earned all-tournament honors at the Arizona State tournament in Tempe. In helping the Matadors win three of their four matches, the senior transfer from Washington State compiled 126 assists, 31 digs, 12 service aces, and 16 kills.
Welch originally was recruited out of Thousand Oaks High by Northridge Coach Walt Ker.
“The neatest thing about Beth this past weekend was that every match she got better,” Ker said. “My perception of her is that she is a great athlete; she is strong, quick and agile. The hardest thing for her has been learning our system. We’re asking her to do things she’s never done before in terms of tactics.”
As impressive as Welch’s ace total was, it doesn’t even tell the whole story.
“There were a lot of bad passes that started (opponents’) offenses off badly as a result of her tough serves,” Ker said.
