Samuel H. Mayes; Cellist With Major Orchestras

Samuel H. Mayes, 73, a child prodigy who became an internationally known soloist and principal cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Born in St. Louis and the first cousin of humorist Will Rogers, Mayes began studying the cello at age 4. At the age of 8, he appeared as soloist with the St. Louis Orchestra. He was principal cellist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the mid-1970s, and later taught music at the University of Michigan. On Aug. 24 in Mesa, Ariz., of heart failure and cancer.
