BUENA PARK : Contract Awarded for Dispatch Center

Plans to revamp the Police Department’s antiquated dispatch center got off the ground this week after several years in limbo.

The City Council awarded a contract to FFJ Architects Inc. of Hesperia to begin designing the $199,000 renovation. The project has been planned several times, but the money was not allocated until this year, officials said.

A 1,200-square-foot addition to the Police Department is planned to house the new communications center. After a review of the existing facility, it was determined that more space was needed to house the needed equipment. Currently, the dispatch center is contained in a small enclave in the basement of the department’s headquarters.

“The center . . . in the basement is not conducive to an efficient operation,” said Police Chief Richard M. Tefank. Currently, all of the dispatching is handled manually.

The $199,000 set aside is for relocation and construction costs.
