More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the all-day Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Moon Children’s Festival scheduled for today at Golden West College.

The festival, which will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., is the college’s second annual observation of the traditional Trung Thu Festival, which centers on Vietnamese children and honors their culture.

Thousands of Vietnamese children from throughout Orange County will be participating in dragon dances, lantern parades, and talent and reading contests, among other festivities, festival coordinator Tri Nguyen said. A variety of food and games will be available to all in attendance, he said.

The event, sponsored by the college and its Vietnamese Student Club, is called a “mid-autumn” festival because native Vietnamese follow the lunar calendar, which has reached the season’s halfway point, said Nguyen, a Golden West counselor.

Although the festivities get under way in the morning, the official opening ceremonies are scheduled at 4 p.m., which is expected to be the peak hour of attendance, he said.

Parking and admission are free.
