Mt. Carmel (3-1, 1-0) went ahead in the first quarter when Jeff Scott capped a 73-yard drive with a one-yard run.

Vista (0-4, 0-1) came back in the second quarter after blocking a punt. The Panthers took over at Mt. Carmel’s 33 and drove to the one, from which Chato Jackson ran it in. The Panthers went for the two-point conversion, but Mt. Carmel stopped the run.

Mt. Carmel quarterback Matt Miller was 16 for 26 passing for 156 yards.

Torrey Pines 21, Fallbrook 16--Greg Cass scored on runs of 4 and 70 yards as host Torrey Pines (2-2, 1-0) upset No. 8 Fallbrook (3-1, 0-1). Torrey Pines quarterback Chad Davis completed seven of 17 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown.

Avocado League

San Marcos 16, Oceanside 7--Lance Gallegos passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead No. 9 San Marcos (3-1, 1-0) past Oceanside (1-3, 0-1). Gallegos completed six of 10 passes for 98 yards, including a 10-yard, second-quarter touchdown pass to Brian Keller. Gallegos added a six-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. San Marcos’ Mark Frazier rushed 80 yards in 23 carries.

Escondido 24, Rancho Bernardo 0--Josh Gestring caught two touchdown passes from Jerry Singleton, and Keith Williams added another touchdown on a three-yard run for Escondido (2-2, 1-0). Rancho Bernardo fell to 2-2, 0-1.

Metro Conference

Chula Vista 24, Castle Park 0--Two-time defending league champion Chula Vista shut out Castle Park, which had been averaging 28.7 points. The Spartans (2-2, 1-0) limited Castle Park (2-2, 0-1) to just 40 yards total offense (17 rushing, 23 passing). Chula Vista’s David Romero had two interceptions, Donnie Edwards one. LeMar Bailey ran for 85 yards in 16 carries, including a 29-yard touchdown run. Steve Gomez added 75 yards rushing in 14 carries, including a 19-yard touchdown run. Rod Rodriguez kicked a 32-yard field goal and added three conversions.

Montgomery 40, Mar Vista 14--Chuck Acuna completed 10 of 20 passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns for Montgomery (2-2, 1-0). Saul Rodriguez caught for passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Tommy Conners and Rodney Davenport also caught touchdown passes.

Montgomery was also able to move the ball on the ground. Gilbert Flores carried 18 times for 91 yards and one touchdown. Mar Vista fell to 0-3, 0-1.

Southwest 21, Bonita Vista 14--Junior Ochoa scored all three Southwest touchdowns, two on passes of 10 and 29 yards from quarterback Andy Quinn. Aran Cibia rushed for 144 yards on 21 carries and quarterback Mike Barnett passed for two touchdowns for Bonita Vista, which fell to 1-3, 0-1. Southwest is 3-1, 1-0.

Nonleague

Mission Bay 42, Clairemont 8--Mission Bay (2-2) erupted offensively after scoring only nine points in its first three games. Quarterback Andy Guyader completed only four of nine passes, but he threw for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

Jason Diaz gained 52 yards in 11 carries, and Milantrio Jenkins carried four times for 63 yards. Pete Razo had three sacks for Mission Bay. Clairemont fell to 0-4.

La Jolla 20, Hoover 0--La Jolla (3-1) recorded its second consecutive shutout. Senior lineman John Michels had three sacks.

Offensively, E.J. Watson, a junior running back, gained 210 yards and scored three touchdowns on 18 carries. He now has nine touchdowns on the season. Nick Alford ran 17 times for 125 yards. As a team, La Jolla rushed for 353 yards on 43 carries, an 8.2 yards-per-carry average. Hoover fell to 1-3.

West Hills 13, Granite Hills 7--Nathan Vail provided the margin of victory by kicking two field goals for West Hills (2-2), one of 40 yards in the first quarter and another of 34 yards in the fourth. Quarterback Joey Fitzgerald also threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Sean Smith for West Hills. Granite Hills fell to 2-2.

Valhalla 20, El Capitan 14--Mike Procopio scored on a one-yard run to break a 14-14 tie in the fourth quarter giving Valhalla (2-2) the victory. Procopio, who scored a touchdown in the third quarter, rushed for 35 yards on 10 carries. Teammate Keith Price rushed for 103 yards on 24 carries and scored one touchdown. Eric Rockhold rushed for 99 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns for El Capitan (0-4).

Grossmont 27, Monte Vista 7--Jason Eskridge exploded on the opening kickoff and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown for fifth-ranked Grossmont (3-0). Eskridge scored again in the third quarter on a one-yard run, and in the fourth, rushed 81 yards to the Monte Vista 10 to set up the final touchdown, when Jamie Cauldren’s caught a 10-yard pass from Tom Karlo.
