THE SIDELINES : PGA Caddy, 37, Has Heart Attack

A caddy who had a heart attack during the final round of the Southern Open golf tournament was reported in unsatisfactory condition at a Columbus hospital today.

Robert (Butch) Vail, a caddy for Ed Dougherty, had the heart attack Sunday during the final round of the PGA tournament.

Vail, 37, of Worchester, Mass., had been listed in critical condition at the Medical Center of Columbus on Sunday night, but his condition was upgraded to unsatisfactory early today.

He collapsed on the sixth fairway, according to Tom Place, director of information for the PGA tour. An unidentified tour official, who was on the scene, said Vail sustained “complete cardiac arrest,” and was unconscious.
