Oxnard 14, Buena 12--A 58-yard touchdown run by Kenyon Lewis early in the third quarter helped Oxnard claim a victory at Ventura High. Lewis, a senior, gained 187 yards in 23 carries as Oxnard improved to 3-2, 1-1.
Buena fullback Chuck Mullaney cut Oxnard’s lead to 14-12 on a three-yard touchdown run with two minutes left in the third quarter. A pass on the two-point conversion attempt was knocked down by Yellowjacket defensive back Greg Wells.
Despite five fumbles in the first half, Oxnard put together a nine-play, 66-yard drive, capped by quarterback Larry Bumpus’ two-yard run and David Smith’s point-after with 1:42 remaining, to take a 7-6 halftime lead.
Buena drove quickly to the Oxnard eight-yard line, but Yellowjacket lineman Armando Salazar put an end to the threat by sacking Jim Seguine at the 20 with 35 seconds left in the half.
A 30-yard completion from Seguine to running back Dan Lemp on a fake punt kept a first-quarter drive alive for Buena (1-4, 1-1). Three plays later, Seguine hit tight end Jeff Prieto with a 13-yard touchdown.
