BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : Nebraska Still a Cut Above, 45-8

Kansas State is enjoying a resurgence this season, but the Wildcats still cannot keep pace with powerful Nebraska.

Mickey Joseph and Leodis Flowers broke open a tight game with third-quarter touchdowns and the Cornhusker defense did not yield a touchdown for the third time this season as No. 8 Nebraska beat Kansas State, 45-8, in a Big Eight Conference game Saturday at Manhattan, Kan.

Nebraska, 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Eight, defeated the Wildcats for the 22nd consecutive time and put the game away in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass play from Mike Grant to Jon Bostick, a 99-yard kickoff return by Tyrone Hughes’ and a 26-yard scoring run by Joseph.

Kansas State (3-2, 0-1), already with more points and three times as many victories as last season, was behind 10-2 at halftime.

The Wildcats handed Nebraska its first quarterback sack and first blocked punt of the season.

Kansas 34, Iowa State 34--Iowa State’s Jeff Shudak kicked a 53-yard field goal with 18 seconds left in a Big Eight game at Ames, Iowa, to give the Cyclones the tie.

Shudak’s field goal capped a wild fourth quarter in which the lead changed hands three times.

Kansas (1-3-1, 0-1-1) took a 34-31 lead a six-yard touchdown run by Maurice Douglas with 2:51 left, and it appeared the Iowa State’s last hopes died when defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield batted down Chris Pedersen’s fourth-down pass with 1:49 left.

But Iowa State (2-2-1, 1-0) held Kansas on fourth down at the Cyclones’ 32 and drove to the Jayhawks’ 36, setting up Shudak’s game-tying field goal.

Tony Sands rushed for 169 yards in 22 carries for Kansas.

Iowa State’s Blaise Bryant rushed for 111 yards in 24 carries and scored two touchdowns.
