Miami Close to Decision on Big East
MIAMI — The University of Miami will announce Wednesday whether it will join the Big East Conference or postpone a decision until after Jan. 1, said Sam Jankovich, the school’s athletic director.
“We still have options,” Jankovich said. “There’s no need to rush.”
Those options, according to Jankovich, include waiting until 1991, at which time Miami would remain an independent or join the Southwest, Southeastern or Atlantic Coast conference. Or the Hurricanes could accept the Big East offer and do one of five things:
1) Remain an independent in football only, because the Big East doesn’t have a football conference.
2) Align themselves with the three Big East football-playing members (Pitt, Boston College and Syracuse) and develop an agreement to schedule some games with ACC schools.
3) Develop a scheduling agreement with the SWC.
4) Form a four-team Big East football conference.
5) Expand the Big East football conference to include West Virginia, Rutgers, Temple and possibly Virginia Tech.
