Suspect in Alleged Racial Attack on Girl to Be Tried as Adult
ORANGE — An Orange County juvenile court judge gave prosecutors the go-ahead Wednesday to try 17-year-old Kurt David Wimberly of Anaheim as an adult for allegedly injuring 15-year-old Amber Jefferson in a brawl that her supporters have said was racially motivated.
Wimberly of Anaheim, who is white, is charged with felony mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting bodily injury and battery in connection with the Aug. 7 incident that left the Garden Grove cheerleader, who is black, with an inch-wide gash down the side of her face.
Wimberly was the only person charged in the incident that involved 12 people, many of whom were armed with bats and boards. Bail was set at $50,000.
