Tokyo to Have Eight Digit Phone Numbers: Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. will convert Tokyo’s seven-digit telephone numbers to eight digits on Jan. 1. The change is in response to a shortage of numbers in Tokyo. The shortage developed in the last few years as demand increased for facsimil, microcomputer and videotex communications in addition to normal telepohone lines.
