P.M. BRIEFING : Loans to Speed Hungary Phones
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Western loans will help Hungary chop the current 12-year wait for a telephone to a mere one year before the turn of the century, the top communications official was quoted as saying today.
Csaba Siklos, minister of transport, communications and water, said $250 million in loans from the World Bank and the European Investment Bank will boost telephone capacity by half over three years, the Magyar Hirlap newspaper reported.
Half a million people are waiting for phones in Hungary, which has only around 1.7 million lines for a population of 10.6 million.
