Catholic School Alters Pledge to Add the ‘Unborn’
LORAIN, Ohio — A Roman Catholic school revised the Pledge of Allegiance to say “with liberty and justice for the born and unborn,” angering some students who said the issue has no place in a patriotic oath.
“It’s like changing the Constitution,” said Angela Martinez, a Lorain Catholic High School junior.
Robert Garcia, a senior, also said the change, which began this week, was a bad idea.
“I feel the ‘born and unborn’ shouldn’t be added. The pledge is a pledge to your country. . . . The pledge deals with patriotism,” he said Thursday.
Principal Joanne Miller was not available for comment. But in an interview published Thursday with the (Lorain) Journal, she defended the change as appropriate.
