Notes on a Scorecard - Oct. 15, 1990

May all Sunday afternoons be this enjoyable at the Coliseum, where the Raiders were hungry, the fans were thirsty and there was more action on the field than in the stands. . . .

Perhaps Bobby Hebert should have sued Jay Schroeder for playing so well, thereby depriving Hebert of a chance to earn a livelihood with the Raiders. . . .

Schroeder took advantage of flawless pass protection in the first half when he threw three touchdown passes, and the Raiders built a 21-0 lead that Seattle couldn’t overcome. The six blockers of granite: left to right, Ethan Horton, Rory Graves, Steve Wisniewski, Don Mosebar, Max Montoya and Steve Wright. . . .

The fans voted no on a trade when they gave Marcus Allen the biggest ovation during the introductions of the starting lineups. . . .

The Raiders’ no-huddle offense in the second quarter was an improvement on their old no-offense huddle. . . .

Do you bring Howie Long back Sunday against the Chargers in San Diego or let him rest another two weeks? The Raiders don’t play the following Sunday. . . .

Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell made Los Angeles’ task in the AFC West more difficult when he let Coach Marty Schottenheimer go to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1989. . . .

The Rams should do something today that they should have done months ago--trade for defense. . . .

Some crazy things would have to happen--after all, this is a crazy season--but USC still could win the national championship. . . .

Every time I see Trojan tailback Mazio Royster, I like him even better. . . .

Todd Marinovich rates the edge over Dan McGwire as a receiver. Marinovich caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Curtis Conway against Stanford. San Diego State’s McGwire caught his own pass, which had been blocked, for no yards against UCLA. . . .

Dennis Green is doing a good job at Stanford, but he’s got to learn that you try to run out the clock when you’re pinned in deep against USC late in the first half. . . .

It’s hard to believe that UCLA scored 45 points Saturday night without Tommy Maddox throwing a touchdown pass. . . .

A Peach Bowl representative was in the Rose Bowl press box scouting the Bruins. . . .

UCLA chancellor Charles Young may be interested to learn that former USC president John Hubbard once was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the sidelines of a Trojan-Hawaii game in Honolulu. . . .

Russell White, Cal’s highly-publicized running back from Crespi High, is for real. . . .

This has been a lousy year for NCAA football officials, who failed to detect a clear case of pass interference on Michigan State during Michigan’s two-point conversion try. . . .

Incidentally, why didn’t ABC leave USC-Stanford for an instant and switch live to the other game it was televising, Michigan-Michigan State, for that game-deciding play? . . .

If you haven’t circled the date of the Virginia-Georgia Tech game on your calender, please do so. It’s Nov. 3. At Virginia. . . .

Now that Dennis Erickson has stopped Miami from celebrating on the field, he should do something to cut down on the pregame fights. . . .

I guess Missouri’s problem against Nebraska wasn’t fifth down. . . .

Look-alikes: Harold Baines and James Worthy. . . .

The Oakland A’s treat baseball playoffs like football playoffs--single elimination. . . .

Roger Clemens may be a terrible hothead, but that still doesn’t mean Terry Cooney shouldn’t have shown common sense and given him a warning instead of tossing him out. . . .

Wayne Gretzky on the Kings: “You have to have speed to win in our division. We’ve got more speed this season.” . . .

Kings Coach Tom Webster is a nice man. When a beat writer’s newspaper folded last season during a road trip, Webster asked him if he needed money for the plane trip home. . . .

The injury to UCLA freshman Ed O’Bannon cost him a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s preseason basketball magazine. . . .

Belated happy 80th birthday to John Wooden, whose coaching achievements at UCLA never will be equalled. . . .

The Clippers are on a roll, signing Ron Harper to a long-term contract, getting first-round draft choices Bo Kimble and Loy Vaught into training camp and agreeing to start contract talks with Benoit Benjamin. . . .

New Lakers Coach Mike Dunleavy apparently thinks opening exhibition games against Portland are more important than Pat Riley thought closing regular-season games against Portland were. . . .

I don’t know how I survived an entire Sunday without seeing Victor Kiam or Lisa Olson being interviewed.
