WORLD : Kenyans Charged With Treason
NAIROBI, Kenya — Four Kenyans, including two lawyers and a leader of an underground opposition group who recently returned from exile, were charged today with treason, a capital offense.
The arrests were the latest in a government crackdown that began in July after an abortive pro-democracy rally sparked riots in Nairobi and the countryside.
President Daniel Arap Moi has repeatedly accused those who advocate a multiparty system of seeking the overthrow of his single-party government.
Prosecutor Alex Etiang told a magistrate’s court that the four arrested men had, acting with others, “intended the overthrow of the government of Kenya by unlawful means.”
