Mormon Leader Home From Hospital
SALT LAKE CITY — Mormon Church President Ezra Taft Benson has returned home after being hospitalized for nearly a month.
Benson, 91, underwent two operations to remove subdural hematomas and later was treated for unrelated gastrointestinal bleeding. He left the hospital Wednesday, said church spokesman Don LeFevre.
Benson’s daily schedule had been somewhat curtailed for the last few years owing to his age. However, he attended weekly meetings of the Council of the Twelve and First Presidency in the Salt Lake Temple prior to his surgeries.
“His doctors will keep a close watch on him,” LeFevre said. “After a month in the hospital, I think it’s just wait and see to determine what kind of activity he will resume.”
Benson was hospitalized Sept. 18 after complaining of severe headaches and difficulty swallowing. The following day, doctors operated to remove two hematomas along the brain. A second surgery was performed four days later when one of the clots reformed.
Benson has been president of the 7.5-million-member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1985.
