Kirk Gibson a Victim of Media Manipulation?

I found your story (Oct. 17) on Kirk Gibson to be unfair. It is particularly surprising because it appears during the World Series--almost exactly on the anniversary of Gibson’s unforgettable Game 1 home run in 1988, the fans’ centennial selection for the greatest moment in Dodger history.

What also astonishes is the seemingly one-sided viewpoint. In what context did Gibson’s agent state that Gibson would not return to the Dodgers unless there are “personnel moves” on the club? Was it in quick response to a reporter’s loaded question? Furthermore, how disrespectful it was to speculate that a Kal Daniels trade or change of position is at the center of the issue.

As a Dodger fan, I understand that Gibson’s ambitions may no longer be consistent with our team’s goals. Even so, it isn’t necessary to choose between the two. Kirk Gibson is a Dodger hero with countless Los Angeles fans. No amount of journalistic manipulation can change that. I resent the attempt.
