Buena Park Has More Freeway Success, Wins, 54-0
BUENA PARK — The Buena Park High School football team won its second Freeway League game since 1983 Friday night and did so convincingly, shutting out La Habra, 54-0.
Buena Park (3-4, 1-1 in league) made a complete turnaround from a week ago, when the offense turned the ball over three times for touchdowns in a 33-0 loss to Sunny Hills. Buena Park’s last Freeway victory was against Sonora in the seventh game last season.
Against La Habra (4-3, 1-1), Buena Park’s offense scored eight touchdowns, all rushing. Quarterback Mark Medellin had four, Angel Barrios three and Robert Starks one.
Barrios carried 22 times for 196 yards, and Starks had 13 carries for 47. The Coyotes outgained La Habra, 371 yards to 85.
Buena Park scored on four of its first five possessions, failing on the fifth only because of a botched 27-yard field-goal attempt. The Coyotes’ mastery continued in the second half, when they again scored on four of five possessions.
La Habra’s Jason Johnson, one of the county’s leading rushers, was held to 21 yards on 11 carries.
