Seagal Keeps ‘Death’ Hold on Box Office

Action star Steven Seagal again stood his ground at the box office, as his action-thriller “Marked for Death” took the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive week.

With ticket sales of approximately $5.1 million, the 20th Century Fox film has grossed more than $28 million.

Second place went to Warner Bros.’ World War II drama “Memphis Belle,” which had ticket sales of about $4.3 million in its second week--a drop of only 14% from its premiere weekend. Based on a true story about a celebrated bomber crew, “Memphis Belle” has grossed about $10 million.

In third place, with ticket sales of about $3.8 million, was MGM/UA’s just-out “Quigley Down Under,” starring Tom Selleck as a sharpshooter in 1860s Australia.

Paramount Pictures’ “Ghost” materialized in fourth place, with receipts of about $3.6 million. Walt Disney Pictures’ “Fantasia” was fifth with ticket sales of about $2.9 million.

In its premiere weekend, Columbia Pictures’ “Night of the Living Dead”--the George Romero-produced remake of his 1968 shocker--scared up ticket sales of about $2.8 million for sixth place.

Tri-Star Pictures’ “Avalon,” which had previously been in limited release at a handful of theaters, widened to about 630 screens to earn approximately $2.8 million for seventh place.

Eighth place went to Warner Bros.’ gangster saga, “GoodFellas,” which had receipts of about $2.6 million.

In ninth place, following its debut weekend (in which it ranked seventh) was Touchstone Pictures’ “Mr. Destiny,” which earned about $2.4 million.

Fox’s Yuppie thriller “Pacific Heights” was 10th, with receipts of about $2.4 million.
