WORLD : 26 Killed in S. African Violence
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — At least 26 people have been killed in more black factional violence, including 16 gunned down in what appeared to be revenge killings in the black township of Soweto, police said today.
Also today, nine African National Congress members were charged with terrorism and the illegal possession of weapons in a case that could further strain relations between the government and the ANC.
One of the nine, Mac Maharaj, is on the ANC’s national executive committee and also is a top official in the closely allied South African Communist Party.
