SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION VI FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Brea Gets Run Out by Rancho Alamitos
Senior Ulysses Trammell rushed for 124 yards and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to lead Rancho Alamitos to a 14-9 victory over Brea-Olinda in a second-round Division VI football playoff Friday night at Garden Grove High.
The Vaqueros (10-3), who advanced to the third round of post-season play for the first time in their 42-year history, will play Tustin next Saturday night.
Trammell has now gained 1,965 yards, which moves him into sixth place on the all-time Orange County single-season list.
After a scoreless first quarter, Rancho Alamitos opened the scoring after Lia Togia recovered a fumble at the Brea-Olinda 34. Two plays later, Chris Singletary found Eric Moore for a 32-yard touchdown with 9:52 to play in the first half.
Brea-Olinda’s Marco Hernandez made it 7-3 with a 32-yard field goal just before halftime. The Rancho Alamitos defense took over in the second half, limiting the Wildcats to only 15 yards rushing. And the Vaqueros came up with the big plays when they needed them. After Brea-Olinda drove to the Rancho Alamitos seven midway through the third quarter, Moore intercepted a pass by Jason Luevanos in the end zone.
The Vaqueros then drove 80 yards in 14 plays behind Trammell, who scored on a 17-yard run to make it 14-3 with 10:08 to play.
Brea-Olinda (8-3-1) and Luevanos came right back with a 69-yard drive that ended with a seven-yard pass to Lew Morales to make it 14-9 with 4:44 left; Brea went for two points but failed.
The Wildcats got the ball back with 3:15 to play and drove to the Rancho Alamitos 30, but James Cabral’s third-down sack of Luevanos for a seven-yard loss helped end the drive.
