Gay Characters on TV

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation/Los Angeles (GLAAD) is appalled that NBC would pull an episode of “Lifestories” that deals with AIDS and includes two gay characters (Nov. 20 article by Steve Weinstein). The action dramatizes the impact of the current campaign by a hate group to drive positive gay and lesbian characters off the air.

NBC appears to be responding to recent events such as the Nov. 4-5 ads by major advertiser Burger King, trumpeting its support for “traditional family values” on TV.

We would like to know what “values” CLeaR-TV and the American Family Assn. are trying to impose on the public. Gays and lesbians are obviously members of families and often are not only parents but also are partners in committed family relationships.

If gay and lesbian characters are driven off the air, be assured that the next targets will be non-Christians and single parents and other non-traditional families.
