HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : CITY SECTION ROUNDUP : Davis Leads Banning Rush Past Kennedy
Tailback Travis Davis scored two touchdowns to lead Banning High to a 20-10 victory over Kennedy in a City Section 4-A Division quarterfinal football playoff game Friday night at Gardena High.
Davis ran for 114 yards in 20 carries for the Pilots (8-3). Davis also had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter and intercepted two passes on defense.
Davis got off to a slow start, gaining only eight yards in his first five attempts. But his sixth carry went for 24 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, giving Banning the lead for good at 6-3.
Kennedy’s top rusher, Ontiwaun Carter, was held to 24 yards in 11 carries, although Carter did have 52 yards on three receptions.
Kennedy (7-5) recorded a first down on its first play from scrimmage as quarterback John McMullen threw to Carter for a 22-yard gain, taking the ball to the Banning 20-yard line and setting up Keith West’s 31-yard field goal. But the Cougars didn’t get their next first down until the third quarter.
The Pilots held a 14-3 lead at halftime. Their second touchdown came on a two-yard run by fullback Ken McKinley with nine minutes one second left in the second quarter and was followed by quarterback Anthony Nicholson’s two-point conversion run.
