From Times Staff and Wire reports

A wind-fanned fire gutted a single-family home in the Porter Ranch area this morning, then quickly spread on wind gusts to the roofs of two adjacent homes and nearby trees and brush, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

The fire that spread to other homes was quickly knocked down by firefighters and water-dropping helicopter crews, Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.

There were no reported injuries in the fire that was reported at 11:15 a.m. at Tribune Street and Melvin Avenue, Wells said. The cause was under investigation.

Santa Ana winds in the 10-15-m.p.h. range carried embers to the nearby homes and brush, but firefighters contained the blaze in about 45 minutes, Wells said. About 50 firefighters and three helicopters battled the fire.
