Asbestos Case Accord: Eagle-Picher Industries of Cincinnati announced a tentative agreement to pay $460 million over 20 years to victims of asbestos disease, but some of the plaintiffs’ lawyers rejected the plan as too small. Eagle-Picher faces 65,000 claims by workers made ill inhaling asbestos fibers in a key case in the attempt to clear a nationwide court backlog stemming from liability over the cancer-causing mineral. The company said two of the four lawyers appointed to negotiate a settlement agreed to the deal.
